I was really excited to make this costume because was awesome/nice enough to let me use one of his old Tenel Ka pieces as inspiration for it! Thank you so muuuuuuuuch, Todd!
I have always loved this ([link]) piece of fanart that he did a long time ago and when I found him on deviantART again after all these years since he submitted the piece to the Tenel Ka site I run, I gushed at him once more about it and asked if I could use it as inspiration for a costume. When he gave me the go ahead (after I gushed at him some more about it, naturally), I started to put it all together.
I had a lot of fun making the armor (Nate helped with this cause I couldn't fit it to myself without it being all lopsided derp derp), cape and belts - the shorts didn't like me as much, but I made them work! Seriously, me trying to sew snakeskin vinyl fabric into shorts that fit somehow-- my sewing machine saw an evil side of me.
There were some things I didn't get a chance to finish before the convention thanks to pre-con sickness (grrrrr) like the scaled shinguards and the etched forearm cuff, but I will definitely be finishing that stuff up and wearing this again!
Also, with the knowledge gained making this outfit and some ideas that have stemmed from this thanks to Todd's amazing fanart, I'll be starting a new version of my Young Jedi Knights armor at some point soon! There were a couple of us talking about a YJK group for Katsucon in February so I figured it was the perfect chance to do so!
Costume: Tenel Ka Djo (Star Wars: Expanded Universe - fanart-inspired outfit) Location: Dragon*Con 2011 - Atlanta, GA Picture by: Nate/Draelight
I'll be back at Dragon*Con this year with two more Tenel Ka outfits! ;D For more about the saber check here: [link] - I got the actual saber handle (under the papaerclay)/blade from ultrasabers.com so there should be more info on their site about what they use to make them!
YESSSS~ we are currently planning a big EU photoshoot and I'll hopefully have my new TK YJK armor done. There's also going to be a Teneniel Djo and a Ta'a Chume there! SO EXCITED.
My boyfriend and I are going to go as Mr. and Dr. Mrs. the Monarch (from Venture Bros. if you've seen it), and I'll probably run around as the Blue Spirit another day, but I don't have any Star Wars costumes. I've always wanted to cosplay Jaina, but my BF has no idea who the YJK are, shame shame. He's an original-trilogy-only sort of guy.
Ahaha, Venture Bros - YES. That will be so awesome! Awww, are there any other SW costumes that he would know that you could do? I'm so excited I'll get to bug you in person, haha! XD
i'm going to try to come up with something, i've still got several months to figure it out. ^_^ i've got some twi'lek lekku that i made awhile ago but never finished.
i'm excited too! it's been quite lovely talking online and i'd love to see your awesome costumes in person!
Are you going to bring a costume? :3333
